Please Ignore Vera DietzPlease Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Really amazing story. Voice, characters, plot, style – all of it just works and I could hardly put it down. Vera is such a strong, honest main character and her story is heartbreaking. You can feel everything she is going through. I loved getting the different character voices every now and then, including inanimate objects. Hearing from other characters made Vera a not-so-unreliable narrator and put things in perspective. I think this could go very wrong in other novels, but King gets it just right. Enough wit and humor to counteract the pain and raw truth. Definitely Printz-worthy.

Hunger Games!!!! (i.e. YA Book Review)

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

You know, I was kind of worried about reading this again because it was just so amazing the first time. But enough time passed that I was a bit fuzzy on some of the details, so I had to re-read it before the movie. Yup – still amazing.

Anyone who says differently is selling something. 😉

(P.S.) Totally bought myself a mockingjay pin today!

Along for the RideAlong for the Ride by Sarah Dessen

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a cute story and fun to listen to. It had some great characters who really surprised me in a I’m-not-what-you-think-I-am way. There are some good lessons about acceptance and learning to be who you are without sacrificing who you thought you were…if that makes any sense. Lots about parent/child relationships, friend relationships and second or even third chances til you get it right. I also learned a lot about babies, oddly enough, that I think I will remember if the time ever comes for me! You will want lots of coffee and pie too. Just warning you.

Goat GirlsGoat Girls by Francesca Lia Block

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read Weetzie Bat a few years ago for grad school and loved it. I may have loved this even more. It’s not so much a story, as a dream that you can feel, taste, smell and hear. The characters sparkle with life with just a few perfect words and gestures. Weetzie’s two daughters, Cherokee (her real daughter) and Witch Baby (her almost-daughter) are children and teens in the two stories that make up Goat Girls. The two tales are about growing up and discovering who you are. It’s feathers and love and friendship and beauty. I could easily get lost in their world of surfing, music, Native American lore, forgotten Hollywood, and slinkster-cool parties….and never return.

The Dead-Tossed Waves (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #2)The Dead-Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I listened to this on CD and I’m not sure if it was the girl’s voice that made me not like it as much or what. I did like it though, just not as much as the first one. And I found the character of Gabrielle to be a bit….irritating at times. But it was a good second installment and answered more questions about the world Ryan has created. And as in the first one, there is hardly time to relax before something else happens to change everything you’ve ever known! I think I will physically read the last one. 🙂
